Movie Narrative: Defiance (2008)



The captivation of moving pictures is a source of tremendous inspiration.  For this reason and many more, RB28’s Movie Narratives, continues showing our love for movies with another movie narrative.  This week, Defiance (2008), will be converted into a narrative and subsequently highlighted.  It is implied that the blog reader reads the movie narrative, and then, he or she should watch the movie.  The effort is to give the blog reader, an enhanced experience.  RB28’s Movie Narratives, ends this movie narrative of Defiance (2008), with some Hollywood facts.
Defiance (2008) is rated R.  Furthermore, it is 2 hours and 17 minutes long.  This movie is categorized under the action, drama and history genre.  The official release date is January 16th, 2009.  The release date is for the Country of the United States of America.  The director was Edward Zwick.  The writers were Clayton Frohman, Edward Zwick and Nechama Tec.  The officially recognized stars were Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell.  The list of the 15 most important cast members is as follows:

The synopsis follows.  Defiance (2008) is a World War II story from Belorrusia.  In Belorrusia, Nazi Germany has occupied the country.  Almost immediately, Nazi soldiers begin to take away the Jew population.  Furthermore, it is believed that within the first weeks, 50,000 Jews, were murdered or killed.  After the initial weeks, it is believed that the Nazi soldiers detained, and held as prisoner, 1 million Jews.  This group of Jews was forced to await deportation or death.  Zus Bielski and Asael Bielski are Jew and brothers.  Furthermore, they watch as the local police take away more Jews.  The local police are supervised, by the Nazi Germans.  Zus and Asael decide to escape and return to their home.  Upon their return to their home, they discover that their father has been killed.  Zus looks around and is able to find the youngest brother; Aron Bielski.  Zus decides to move the group into the forest.  Some time passes and the fourth brother arrives; Tuvia Bielski.  The group of brothers is permanently living in the forest, when Aron decides to leave to be able to walk around.  Furthermore, he finds more people and a mass grave.  Aron returns to the settlement site with the people.  Zus and Tuvia plan revenge on the local police chief.  They believe that, he murdered their father.  Zus and Tuvia decide to go talk to a man named Koscik.  Tuvia successfully speaks to, and receives, food and a pistol from Koscik.  Additionally, he returns to the settlement site with more Jews, which were hiding in Koscik’s barn.  Furthermore, Tuvia received confirmation from Koscik that, the police chief is responsible for their father’s murder.  Tuvia tells Zus that, it was the police chief who killed their father; his name is Bernicki.  Furthermore, Tuvia decides to travel to Bernicki’s house.  At Bernicki’s house, Tuvia decides to enter and kill Bernicki.  Tuvia successfully kills Bernicki and his two sons.  Tuvia returns to the settlement site to give Zus confirmation that, the deed has been done.  Unexpectedly, the settlement site keeps growing and growing with more Jews seeking refuge.  Time passes and ultimately, the camp of Jews has to survive a major attack, or battle, against the Nazi soldiers.  Director Edward Zwick does a very good job with this movie.  Furthermore, the storyline is simple, but, it is well developed.  The cinematography, especially the forest, is very good.  The writers do an equally good job.  All of the interaction between the Bielski brothers is well written and engaging.  The officially recognized stars do a good job performing their roles.  Special recognition is merited to Daniel Craig and Live Schreiber for the Tuvia and Zus characters.  Overall, this movie earns the rating of 7 out of 10. 
The movie narrative is as follows.  As context for this movie, in 1941, Nazi Germany occupies Belorrusia.  The Nazi soldiers, with the help of local police, took away the Jew population.  It is believed, that within weeks, 50 thousand Jews were murdered or killed.  It is also believed that, 1 million awaited deportation and death.  The scene changes, the local police are taking people away.  The Nazi soldiers are there to help and supervise.  Zus Bielski, and another young man, watches from a distance.  The other young man is Zus’s younger brother.  Both men return to their home.  Immediately upon their return, they discover that, their father was killed.  Zus looks around the house and finds the youngest brother; Aron Bielski.  The other brother is Asael Bielski.  The three brothers prepare their things and leave.  Furthermore, they enter the forest and wait.  Asael cannot stop crying.  Zus decides to move the group deeper into the forest.  It is August of the year 1941.  Asael and Aron are sleeping when the last brother of the family arrives; Tuvia Bielski.  Tuvia is the eldest of the brothers.  Zus has a wife and child at another location.  Tuvia appears to be married, but, he doesn’t talk about it.  The four brothers start to permanently live in the forest.  Aron walks around the forest, and unexpectedly, he finds more people.  Furthermore, he finds a large mass grave.  The scene changes; Tuvia, Zus and Asael talk about the local police chief.  They think that he is responsible for the murder of their father.  Furthermore, Asael knows a man who owns a pistol.  Aron returns with the people that he found in the forest.  Tuvia decides to ask Koscik for food and the pistol.  At Koscik’s house, Koscik and Tuvia talk.  Furthermore, Koscik gives Tuvia the pistol with the four lone bullets.  Unexpectedly, the local police arrive.  Tuvia hides in the barn.  Additionally, he discovers other people hiding there.  Koscik and Bernicki talk about the hunt for Jews.  Bernicki and the local police leave.  It is revealed that the Bielski brothers are Jew.  Tuvia leaves and he takes the group, which was in the barn, with him.  Simon Haretz identifies himself to Tuvia as his ex-teacher.  In the forest, Tuvia tells Zus that, Bernicki killed their father.  Tuvia travels to Bernicki’s house.  Furthermore, he enters and kills Bernicki, along with his two sons.  The next morning, and at the settlement in the forest, Zus and Tuvia talk.  Furthermore, Zus knows that Bernicki and his two sons are dead.  Zus and Tuvia reach an agreement to not let more people, live with them, at the settlement in the forest.  Later on that day, Tuvia returns with more people.  He also believes that, they are extended relatives.  The scene changes, it is October of the year 1941.  The people start to make shelters.  Tuvia and Zus, appear, to have become the leaders of the people.  Unexpectedly, a group of young men arrive to rob the people of the settlement.  Zus and Tuvia successfully diffuse the situation.  The young men are Jew, and, they join the settlement.  Unfortunately, the men are from the place were Zus’s wife and child were living, or, hiding.  The men tell Zus that, both are dead.  The settlement is named the Bielski Otriad.  An Otriad is an armed brigade.  Zus organizes a raid to steal food.  The group arrives at a farm, and, they kill everyone that they see.  Furthermore, they ambush a Nazi soldier riding a motorcycle.  After the ambush, more Nazi soldiers arrive.  The group hides before they attack.  One of the Nazi soldiers urinated on Zus, and, Zus starts the attack.  The attack is successful, and, all of the Nazi soldiers are killed.  Unfortunately, a second truck of Nazi soldiers arrives.  The group is forced to retreat, and, one member is shot.  Furthermore, Asael is almost killed.  The people pass time at the Bielski Otriad.  Additionally, the Otriad is out of food, and, Zus fights another man.  Furthermore, Asael is still missing.  It also appears that two men are missing, and, presumed dead.  Tuvia, Zus and another man visit Koscik’s farm.  Unfortunately, they discover that he was hanged, because, he was a Jew lover.  Tuvia, Zus and the other man bury Koscik.  They also discover a cellar with two women inside.  Asael was also hiding with the women.  The group returns to the Otriad.  Zus, Asael and another man leave on another mission for food.  They successfully ambush a farmer who was traveling by horse and carriage.  The people pass time at the Bielski Otriad.  Unexpectedly, men with guns arrive with the local police.  The Otriad prepares for a battle.  They also move the people deeper into the forest.  Nazi soldiers are part of the armed group that, arrived to attack.  Furthermore, they quickly attack an abandoned settlement site.  Zus, Tuvia and the men hide on the other side of the river.  Furthermore, they open fire and start the battle.  The group of armed men, that are attacking, retreat and the battle ends.  Zus and Tuvia decide to re-locate the Otriad deeper into the forest.  The Otriad stops to rest.  Zus and Tuvia leave to walk around.  Unexpectedly, they are captured by Russian mercenaries.  The Russian mercenaries, take Zus and Tuvia, to their commander.  The Russian mercenaries call themselves the October Otriad.  The Russian commander agrees to let them be, but, the Bielski Otriad has to send their best fighters.  To the October Otriad, the Bielski Otriad is known as the Jew Bandits.  Time passes and the Bielski Otriad starts to build shelters.  Tuvia is officially the commander.  Time passes, more people arrive to live at the Otriad.  One of the new men tells Tuvia, that there is a ghetto of Jews in the area.  Furthermore, that it is governed by a council.  Also, that Jews disappear all of the time.  Zus and Tuvia have a terrible argument with each other.  The argument becomes a terrible fist fight.  Zus leaves to be part of the group of best men, which has to be, with the Russian mercenaries.  Tuvia and Asael visit and enter the Jew ghetto.  The commander of the October Otriad arrives for the best; of the Jew men.  Tuvia speaks to the council of the ghetto.  At the meeting with the council, a large group of Jews decide to leave with Tuvia and Asael.  The large group successfully escapes the ghetto.  The large group arrives, at the Bielski Otriad, and they register to stay.  Furthermore, the leadership organizes the group by trade and abilities.  Tuvia gives a speech about the rules of the community.  Asael Bielski marries a woman named Chaya.  At the same time the wedding ceremony is happening, the Jew men alongside the October Otriad, conduct a successful ambush against Nazi soldiers.  Time passes and it is December of the year 1941.  The settlement, or camp, is out of food.  Furthermore, the men start to argue about Tuvia’s leadership.  Tuvia kills his horse, so that, the Otriad can eat meat.  The October Otriad arrives at the winter shelter.  Tuvia meets a woman at one of the shelters.  Furthermore, he feels affection for her.  Tuvia also gives her, his coat and gun.  Tuvia is informed that there is a sickness that is spreading throughout the settlement site.  At the same time, Tuvia is also informed that the Germans are in the area.  The woman, who is wearing Tuvia’s coat, is attacked by a German dog on the way back to the settlement.  However, the woman successfully survives the attack.  Tuvia travels to the October Otriad.  He also speaks with the commander and asks for medicine.  The commander tells Tuvia that, they have to attack a police station guarded by Nazi soldiers, in order, to have medicine.  Zus is present, and, he volunteers the Jew men for the raid, or, attack.  Zus leads the attack, while, Tuvia stays behind as a driver.  They got the medicine, but, Zus is wounded in the battle.  Furthermore, he is the lone survivor.  The Bielski Otriad holds a ceremony for the soldiers that, were killed in the raid.  Tuvia contracts the disease that, is circulating around the settlement site.  One of the men, attacks Asael’s wife.  Asael and the other man shove each other.  Tuvia punishes both Asael and the other man.  However, the other man becomes very angry and bitter.  At the October Otriad, the Russian mercenaries beat up a Jew.  Zus goes to the commander about the mistreatment of Jews.  The man that was fighting with Asael is named Arkady.  Arkady leads a rebellion, and, takes all of the food.  Tuvia comes out to confront Arkady.  Arkady tells Tuvia that, he is no longer commander of the Otriad.  Tuvia kills Arkady, and, he re-establishes control.  From this point forward; the series of events, take the viewer, to the end.  The Nazi German soldiers organize a large attack on the settlement site.  You have to watch, to know how, the attack goes.  Finally, you have to watch, to see how, the movie ends.
