Movie Narrative: Saving Grace B. Jones (2009)


The captivation of moving pictures is a source of tremendous inspiration.  For this reason and many more, RB28’s Movie Narratives, continues showing its love for movies with another movie narrative.  This week, Saving Grace B.             The synopsis follows.  Saving Grace B. Jones (2009) is a drama story, out of a small town in Missouri.  In Boonville, Missouri U.S.A., Landy Bretthorst owns a farm and bakery.  However, he works the bakery full time.  Landy is married to his wife Bea Bretthorst, and, they have a daughter named Lucy Bretthorst.  Landy also has a sister, in an insane asylum.  Her name is, Grace.  At this time in Missouri, 1951, Landy has been working on getting his sister released from the insane asylum.  At the same time, Landy’s friend from the U.S. Army asks Landy, for a big favor.  Landy’s friend lives in Brooklyn, New York.  Furthermore; his daughter Carrie Staley, witnessed a brutal street fight, and subsequent, stabbing.  He asks Landy, if his daughter can spend the summer with him and his family.  Landy agrees, and, Carrie arrives in Boonville Missouri.  Furthermore, she quickly becomes friends with Lucy Bretthorst, and, the Carter girls.  Landy is successful in petitioning the government, for Grace’s release.  Landy travels to Oklahoma, in order, to take his sister out of the insane asylum.  Lucy and Carrie travel with him.  Landy successfully returns to Boonville, with Grace.  The Bretthorst family hosts a big party, in honor of, Grace’s release.  A neighbor, from across the street, grudgingly attends the party.  His name is Dan Jones, and, he is re-married to a woman named Ella Jean Jones.  His first wife was Grace.  Therefore, Grace’s name is Grace B. Jones.  Grace and Dan, do have an opportunity to talk to each other, at the party.  Unfortunately, Grace starts to return to her crazy self.  Grace was in the insane asylum, for more than 16 years.  Apparently, her last day before the insane asylum, was her wedding day to Dan Jones.  Ultimately, Grace cannot escape her crazy self or past.  Grace becomes a huge problem, after a couple of tragic incidents.  Landy is forced to find a solution, to the Grace B. Jones problem.  Director, Connie Stevens, does a very good job.  The viewer does get the impression that, Grace is crazy.  Furthermore, the story is a little bit complicated.  However, Director Connie Stevens is able to make it, a coherent story.  The writers, Jeffry Elison and Connie Stevens, don’t do a good job.  There is a lot that, falls short with this story.  Regrettably, the interaction between the characters, also falls short.  The officially recognized stars contribute tremendously.  They would be missed, if they were not chosen.  Special recognition is merited to Michael Biehn, for the Landy Bretthorst character.  Overall, Saving Grace B. Jones (2009) earns the rating of 6 out of 10. 
            The movie narrative of, Saving Grace B. Jones (2009), is as follows.  The year is 1951, and, the location is Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.  A girl leaves a movie theater, by herself.  The girl’s name is, Carrie Staley.  Her mother recently died, and, she narrates the beginning of the movie.  After leaving the movie theater, Carrie gets on a bus.  While on the bus, Carrie witnesses two black men fighting each other.  One of the black men, kills the other.  Carrie’s father decides to send Carrie out of, Brooklyn, New York.  Coincidentally, Carrie’s father was friends with a man named Landy Bretthorst.  The friendship was developed, during his service in the U.S. Army.  Furthermore; Landy has agreed to have Carrie, at his house, with his wife and daughter for the summer.  Landy, and his family, live in a small town; Boonville, Missouri U.S.A.  Carrie passes time, in Boonville, with Lucy Bretthorst and the Carter girls.  Landy is Boonville’s baker, and, he also owns a farm.  Landy talks to another man, about his sister Grace.  Additionally, the man shows Landy that, he has a fox, in the back of the bakery.  Dan Jones talks with his wife about Landy’s sister, Grace.  Grace was sent to an insane asylum.  Before the insane asylum, Grace was married to Dan Jones.  Therefore, her name is Grace B. Jones.  Dan re-married, and, he has a new wife.  The scene changes, and, Grace is at the insane asylum.  Landy picks up the group of girls, at the movie theater.  Furthermore, the rain has started for the season.  Landy leaves to Oklahoma, in order, to pick up his sister Grace.  Lucy and Carrie travel with him.  Landy asked the government, to release Grace.  The government agreed, to release Grace to Landy.  There isn’t much information, as to why, Grace is an insane asylum.  People believe that, the incident involves an accident with a big truck; on the day of her wedding.  Grace was 17 years old.  The date was July 6th, 1935.  Landy, Lucy and Carrie arrive at the insane asylum.  Landy meets with the director, of the insane asylum.  Grudgingly, the director releases Grace.  Landy returns to Boonville, with Grace.  Landy talks to Grace, about the things that, have changed in the last 16 years.  The Bretthorst family, hosts a big party for Grace.  Additionally, a lot of the neighbors are present.  The wives talk about the rains, and, the problems with the river.  Lucy and the Carter girls, search for Carrie.  Carrie has been missing from the party.  Bea Bretthorst, Landy’s wife, takes Grace to the party in the living room.  Grace is greeted by the neighborhood.  Grace sits and talks to people, at the party.  Dan Jones and his wife, arrive at the party.  Landy and Dan talk; furthermore, Landy asks Dan to stay.  Grace sees Dan Jones, and, she approaches him.  Dan Jones introduces Ella Jean, to Grace.  Ella Jean is Dan Jones’s wife, and, she is pregnant.  The moment becomes awkward, and, Dan leaves the party along with his wife.  Dan and Ella Jean live across the street.  Grace follows Dan, and, they talk in the rain and in the middle of the street.  Carrie and Grace pass time talking.  Landy and Bea pass time with Lucy and Carrie; before the girls go to sleep.  Unexpectedly, Lucy and Carrie get up to leave somewhere.  Landy knows, where they are going.  Furthermore, he lets them go.  Lucy and Carrie arrive, at a Black gospel service.  At the same time, Grace passes time in her bedroom.  A member of the congregation, walks Lucy and Carrie home.  One of the Carter girls, is also, with them.  Unexpectedly, Grace is on the street walking.  Grace hides from the girls, and, she continues walking.  The next morning, Lucy makes breakfast for her father.  Grace arrives and joins Landy, for breakfast.  Carrie and Bea follow a moment later.  The rains continue, and, Lucy and Carrie pass the day together.  A Black man arrives, at Landy’s bakery.  Reverend Potter also arrives, at Landy’s bakery.  Landy gives the Black man bread, free of charge.  The bread is for Black families, which are being affected, by the heavy rains.  Reverend Potter attempts to talk to Landy, about Grace.  Reverend Potter has concerns about Grace.  Furthermore, he believes that Grace, is permanently crazy.  Lucy and Carrie pass time, with the Carter girls, at the movie theater.  After the movie, a boy asks Carrie out on a date.  Carrie says yes, and, Lucy is there to help.  It is Sunday, the Bretthorst family attends religious services.  Carrie and Grace, are also, with the family.  After the service, Landy ignores Reverend Potter on purpose.  Bea Bretthorst passes time, with Lucy and Carrie, cooking dinner.  Grace walks into the kitchen, when unexpectedly, Dan Jones knocks on the door.  The rain is hitting hard, and, the men were out helping the town.  Dan Jones is coming directly from helping, due, to the hard rain.  Furthermore, he asks to talk to Grace.  Dan gives Grace, a freshly caught fish.  Grace passes time by herself, and, talking to herself in an angry manner.  The next morning, the rain continues to hit hard.  Landy prepares, in order, to leave and help the town.  Grace attempts to talk to Landy.  Furthermore, she appears to be anxious about it.  Bea, Lucy and Carrie also leave to help the town.  Grace passes time talking, to herself.  Additionally, she starts to cry.  The rain hits hard, and, the river water has risen.  Additionally, the waters have risen past the banks of the river.  Landy is at the river, along with the men from the town, trying to stop the river water from flooding the town.  At night, Landy returns to his house.  Grace starts to act crazy, and, she carries around a big pair of scissors.  Landy and Bea pass time talking; as husband and wife.  Unexpectedly, Grace starts to cut her hair.  She also enters Lucy’s bedroom, and, she watches Lucy and Carrie.  The next morning, the rain continues to hit hard.  Grace dances in the living room, by herself.  Ella Jean Jones knocks on the door.  Awkwardly, Ella Jean leaves, and gives, scraps of fabric.  Bea passes time with, Lucy and Carrie.  Grace starts to run in the rain.  Bea leaves Lucy and Carrie, at the house.  Lucy and Carrie pass the afternoon, making a dress with Grace.  Carrie’s date arrives, and, Landy talks to him before he sees Carrie.  Carrie leaves on her date, with the boy from the military school.  Lucy passes time, with one of the Carter girls.  On the roof of the house, Lucy passes time with Grace.  Grace tells Lucy that, she is crazy.  Lucy notices that, Grace cut her hair.  The next morning, Lucy and Grace go fishing.  Landy wakes up Carrie, and, he asks her if she knows where Lucy is.  Carrie tells Landy that, she is fishing with Grace.  Grace and Lucy start to fish on the river.  Additionally, they use a boat, which they found, on the bank of the river.  Unexpectedly, it starts to rain hard.  Lucy starts to row, but, Grace goes crazy and doesn’t help.  The boat flips over, and, Grace and Lucy fall into the river.  Landy is at the bakery, but, he decides to go to the river.  Furthermore, he was delayed, because, he stopped to help the fox.  While in the river, Grace goes crazy.  Lucy tries to swim, but, Grace hits her and pushes her down.  Lucy dies, and, Grace leaves the body in the river.  A man drives by, and, he stops.  Furthermore, he sees Lucy in the river.  The man takes Lucy’s body, out of the river.  The man walks to his truck, at this time Landy is arriving.  The man gives Landy the body, and, he leaves.  Landy is holding Lucy’s body, when, Dan Jones arrives to help.  Grace watches everything, but, she doesn’t help.  The family and town, bury, Lucy Bretthorst.  The rain continues, to hit hard.  During dinner, after the funeral, Grace goes crazy.  From this point forward; the series of events, take the viewer, to the end.  The heavy rains continue, to be a backdrop to this story.  During a heavy rainfall, Grace goes crazy and stabs Bea, with a pair of scissors.  Landy is forced to find a solution, to the Grace B. Jones problem.  Finally; you have to watch, in order to know, how this movie ends.
            The movie narrative of the feature film, Saving Grace B.
