Movie Narrative: The Last Stand (2013)

            The synopsis follows.  The Last Stand (2013) is an action crime story, out of the State of Arizona.  In the State of Arizona, U.S.A., it is 8:00 am in Sommerton.  The high school football team, and fans, prepares to leave the town.  Everyone is in the downtown area.  Sheriff Ray Owens arrives at the downtown.  Sheriff Owens walks towards the Mayor of the Town.  The mayor is surprised to hear that, Sheriff Owens isn’t going to the high school football game.  Sheriff Owens says that, someone has to stay behind.  They agree to see each other, again, on Sunday.  In the diner, Sheriff Owens sits down at the counter.  A worker greets Sheriff Owens.  Furthermore, he shares that, the weekend will be quiet.  It is 3:30 am, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  F.B.I. Agent John Bannister arrives, to be able to, conduct a quick meeting.  A top secret operation is about to begin.  A federal prisoner is about to be moved, to federal death row.  Gabriel Cortez, the notorious Mexican Drug Cartel Boss, is the prisoner.  Dozens of F.B.I. agents, are going to take part.  Cortez is placed inside a cargo van.  The F.B.I. agents enter their cars, and, a large convoy leaves.  The convoy stops at a red light.  Unexpectedly, a large construction magnet picks up the cargo van.  Inside the cargo van, Cortez fights the F.B.I. agent.  The F.B.I. agents exit the cars, and, they watch.  A gunman, opens fire on the F.B.I. agents.  The gunman stands on the magnet.  The cargo van is placed on the flat roof, of a building.  The F.B.I. agents enter the building.  They start to run up, to the flat roof.  Three gunmen open the cargo van; with a bomb.  The F.B.I. agents are on the staircase; ascending.  Cortez is alive, whilst, the F.B.I. agent is dead.  The handcuffs and restrains, are taken off Cortez.  Cortez and the gunmen, prepare ropes.  They rappel horizontally, and, land on another building.  On the streets, more F.B.I. agents arrive.  On the flat roof, the F.B.I. agents discover an abandoned cargo van.  Bannister receives an update; Cortez is gone.  Surprisingly, there are decoys, of Cortez, on the street.  The F.B.I. agents discover the ropes, and, the decoys run.  Some F.B.I. agents chase.  On the street, Bannister and two agents take down a decoy.  Bannister leaves to chase a second decoy.  In the alley, two F.B.I. agents are attacked.  Surprisingly, Cortez exits the car holding a gun.  He approaches F.B.I. Agent Richards; a woman.  She becomes detained by the gunmen.  At the office, Bannister orders all of the airports closed; within a 100 mile radius.  Cortez’s men, give Cortez a prototype Corvette ZR1 for the escape.  Cortez begins to fly, on the highway.  He also hopes to arrive at the border, with the Country of Mexico, very quickly.  Furthermore, Cortez plans to cross the border, through, Sommerton Arizona.  Meanwhile and in Sommerton, Sheriff Owens learns that the weekend is not going to happen in a quiet manner.  Sheriff Owens discovers a murdered farmer, Mr. Parsons.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey is killed in a big gunfight.  Furthermore, the gunfight was against a man named, Burrell.  Burrell is Cortez’s man in Sommerton.  Overall, Sheriff Owens fully understands Cortez’s escape plan.  Furthermore, he knows where Cortez will attempt to cross the border.  At the location, Sheriff Owens discovers a bridge.  He also decides to defend the bridge, and prevent, Cortez from crossing into Mexico.  At the same time, the remaining deputy sheriffs, along with 2 local citizens, prepare to defend the downtown area.  The downtown is going to be attacked, by Burrell and his men.  The full scale battle occurs, in the downtown.  On the bridge, Cortez arrives and an all out fist fight occurs.  The fight is between Cortez and Sheriff Owens.  Director, Jee-woon Kim/Kim Jee-woon, does a good job.  To start, all of the action sequences in this movie work.  The stunts, the gunfights, the explosions and the high speed driving are all fantastic stuff.  Additionally, there is a touch of originality, to the previously mentioned.  Regrettably, several things fall short.  The other parts of the movie, needed more development.  However, a good effort is recognized.  The writer does an equally good job.  The story is captivating, through its simplicity.  The Mexican Drug Cartel stuff is also done, in the correct amounts.  There isn’t a lot of overkill, to this aspect of the movie.  Furthermore, there is a touch of originality, which can be felt.  Unfortunately, several things fall short.  For example, the interaction between the characters needed more development.  Obviously, the character Sheriff Owens, needed more charm and personality.  However and finally, a good writing effort is recognized.  The officially recognized stars contribute tremendously.  They would be missed, if they were not chosen.  Overall, The Last Stand (2013) earns the rating of 5 out of 10.
            The movie narrative of, The Last Stand (2013), is as follows.  On the side of the highway, a state highway police officer sits and waits.  The location is 9 miles, outside Las Vegas Nevada.  Unexpectedly, a sports car drives by super fast.  The highway police officer, is not able to notice.  However, the radar gun reports 197 miles per hour.  The highway police officer, looks out the window and sees nothing.  He calls the police dispatcher.  He also reports a low flying jet, in the area.  The sports car continues, on the highway, at a super high speed.  It is revealed that, the sports car is on route to Sommerton Junction, Arizona U.S.A.  It is 8:00 am, in Sommerton Arizona.  The high school football team, and fans, prepares to leave the town.  Everyone is in the downtown area.  Sheriff Ray Owens arrives at the downtown.  Sheriff Owens walks towards the Mayor of the Town.  The mayor is surprised to hear that, Sheriff Owens isn’t going to the high school football game.  Sheriff Owens says that, someone has to stay behind.  They agree to see each other, again, on Sunday.  Sheriff Owens quickly reminds the mayor that, his sports car is parked in a fire zone.  Surprisingly, the mayor tosses Sheriff Owens the car keys.  If there is a fire, then, Sheriff Owens is supposed to move it.  Sheriff Owens isn’t pleased.  In the diner, Sheriff Owens sits down at the counter.  A worker greets Sheriff Owens.  Furthermore, he shares that, the weekend will be quiet.  Sheriff Owens drinks coffee, and, he looks at all of the diner’s customers.  All of a sudden, two men stand out.  Sheriff Owens greets the two men.  The men greet back, at Sheriff Owens.  They also say that, they are cargo truck drivers.  Currently, they are transporting auto parts.  One of the men, is named Burrell.  Burrell expects to arrive, in New Orleans, by noon the next day.  Burrell pays and says goodbye, to Sheriff Owens.  Christie the server, asks Sheriff Owens if, he is going to order.  Sheriff Owens says that, he is not going to order.  He also insists that, he has to leave.  Sheriff Owens sits in the S.U.V. and waits.  He writes down the license plate, of the cargo truck, as it passes by.  At the same time, two deputy sheriffs pass time with Lewis Dinkum.  They shoot a side of beef, with a large revolver.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey wants his turn.  He fires, and, the revolver kicks super hard.  The revolver hits, Deputy Sheriff Bailey, in the face.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey is disoriented and confused.  Dinkum is able to take away, the revolver.  It looks like, Deputy Sheriff Bailey, has a bloodied broken nose.  Unexpectedly, Sheriff Owens arrives.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey feels nervous.  Sheriff Owens exits the S.U.V. upset.  He reprimands Deputy Sheriff Figuerola and Dinkum.  He also wants to know, what the hell is going on?  Sheriff Owens wants to see a gun permit, from Dinkum, for the revolver.  He also orders, Bailey and Figuerola, to clean themselves up.  Dinkum hands over the gun permit.  Apparently, everything is registered as if, it was a museum.  Dinkum says his business hours.  Deputy Sheriff Figuerola apologizes, for the situation.  Sheriff Owens talks to Deputy Sheriff Figuerola, about, the cargo truck drivers at the diner.  He hands over the license plate number.  He also asks him, to look up the information.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey says that, he will do it.  Bailey is also supposed to follow up, with the state highway police.  Unexpectedly, Sheriff Owens takes the revolver, from Dinkum.  He fires a shot, at the side of beef.  At the same time, the cargo truck drivers are arriving at a farm.  Several men are also there, waiting.  One of the men reports problems, with the farmer.  Burrell orders the men to get started.  He is also going to take care of the problem, with the farmer.  The farmer rides on the tractor.  Burrell stops the farmer.  The farmer wants Burrell off, his property.  Burrell says my name is, Burrell.  He also says that, he is the director of a T.V. commercial.  Burrell expresses that, he wants to film on his farm.  The farmer orders Burrell off, his property.  Burrell insists that, he will be paid a lot of money.  The farmer takes out his shotgun and orders Burrell, off his property.  Burrell shouts at the farmer, to put the gun away.  Unexpectedly, the farmer fires a warning shot.  The warning shot lands, in front of, Burrell.  The farmer orders Burrell off, his property.  Burrell agrees to leave.  However, he does it in a slow manner.  From a distance and unexpectedly, one of Burrell’s men shots and kills, the farmer.  At the Sheriffs’ Station, a woman deputy sheriff reprimands a prisoner.  Apparently, the man is her ex-boyfriend.  The ex-boyfriend asks, for an aspirin.  He also wants to talk about, why, he is the ex-boyfriend.  The deputy sheriff continues to reprimand, her ex-boyfriend.  The ex-boyfriend is named Frank.  The woman deputy sheriff is named Sarah.  Out of nowhere, Deputy Sheriff Bailey arrives to greet Frank.  Surprisingly, Bailey asks if, they are a couple again.  Frank says maybe, whilst, Sarah says no.  Bailey also asks, out loud, if Frank can be released.  Deputy Sheriff Figuerola enters and says, no.  Frank has to be in jail, for the weekend.  Bailey talks to Figuerola, about, looking up the license plate number.  Figuerola agrees to do it; one time only.  In the evening, Sheriff Owens passes time at his house.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey, arrives with the information, on the cargo truck.  Bailey says that, everything looks okay.  Additionally, the driver is Burrell Thomas.  Sheriff Owens says, good work.  Bailey also has something, on his mind.  Sheriff Owens asks, for what’s on his mind.  Deputy Sheriff Bailey says that, he wants to move to a different police force.  Somewhere, where there is more police action; would be preferable.  Bailey also knows that, Sheriff Owens once worked narcotics in the City of Los Angeles.  Sheriff Owens says, Sommerton has its charms.  Surprisingly, Deputy Sheriff Bailey asks for a transfer.  He wants to transfer to Los Angeles.  Sheriff Owens thinks that, Los Angeles is not a good place for Bailey.  He also understands that, Bailey is a young man.  Furthermore, he understands his desire for adventure.  Reluctantly, Sheriff Owens agrees to help Deputy Sheriff Bailey.  The scene changes, and, it is 3:30 am in Las Vegas, Nevada U.S.A.  F.B.I. Agent Richards; a woman.  She becomes detained by the gunmen.  Cortez kills an F.B.I. agent; a man.  On the street, Bannister runs.  He arrives at the alley, and, discovers the dead F.B.I. agent.  At the office, Bannister orders all of the airports closed; within a 100 mile radius.  He also wants all of the footage, from the security cameras.  All of the decoys were arrested.  Bannister enters an interrogation room.  One of the decoys is waiting, with his attorney.  Bannister demands to know, how much he’s being paid.  The decoy pretends to speak Spanish.  The attorney does the translation.  The decoy doesn’t know, what Bannister is talking about.  Bannister asks if, he’s an idiot.  He also asks, why, the decoy is dressed that way.  The decoy says that, he likes the National Soccer Team of the Netherlands.  Bannister says; you guys fucking with me or what?  The decoy complains that, Bannister almost broke his shoulder.  Bannister gives an excuse.  The decoy reveals that, he knows English.  The decoy says that, everything is just Las Vegas.  Unexpectedly, Bannister is taken away.  At 4:32 am and in Arizona, Sheriff Owens receives a telephone call.  Christie, the server at the diner, is calling.  Christie reports that, the milk hasn’t been delivered.  Sheriff Owens asks if, it is a police matter.  Christie says that the farmer, Mr. Parsons, is never late.  Furthermore, she feels worried.  Surprisingly, Sheriff Owens agrees with Christie.  He promises to send deputy sheriffs, to look for Mr. Parsons.  At the office, Bannister is shown the footage, from the security cameras.  Cortez is abandoning the white car.  He is also going to drive, a black sports car.  Cortez is also taking Agent Richards, as a hostage.  Surprisingly, Bannister doesn’t recognize the car.  An F.B.I. agent says that, the car is a ZR1.  A prototype Corvette ZR1, being more specific about the previously said.  Apparently, it was stolen from the L.A. Auto Show; a few days ago.  The Corvette ZR1 has 1,000 horse power.  Bannister orders the search of the Corvette ZR1; to all F.B.I. agents.  At 4:45 am, highway police close the highway.  They also operate a checkpoint.  Unexpectedly, Cortez arrives in the Corvette ZR1, at the checkpoint.  Surprisingly, Cortez drives around the highway police checkpoint.  At the Parsons Farm, Deputy Sheriff Bailey arrives with Deputy Sheriff Sarah.  Surprisingly, the front door is open.  Bailey and Sarah enter the house.  They look around using their flashlights.  On the highway, Cortez drives in an erratic manner.  The police chase after Cortez.  It is revealed that, Agent Richards is a prisoner in the Corvette ZR1.  At the office, Bannister orders more checkpoints and road blocks.  He also attempts to predict, where, Cortez is going.  Bannister reveals that, Cortez is a professional race car driver.  Additionally, he saw him race.  Apparently, Cortez races cars, using a pseudonym.  Unexpectedly, Bannister receives a telephone call from Agent Richards.  Cortez and Bannister talk, on the telephone.  Bannister says that, everything ends in 1 of 2 ways.  Cortez threatens to kill, Agent Richards.  Cortez tells Bannister to stop the chase, or else, Agent Richards is dead.  On the telephone, Agent Richards apologizes to Bannister.  Cortez continues to threaten Bannister.  He also throws the telephone, out the window.  At his house, Sheriff Owens receives a telephone call.  Deputy Sheriff Figuerola tells Sheriff Owens that, they have found a murdered Mr. Parsons.  On the highway, the F.B.I. helicopter has found the Corvette ZR1.  The time is 5:04 am.  A police road block is waiting, for Cortez.  Bannister talks to the police, on the telephone.  He urges that Cortez, cannot be, underestimated.  The police continue to wait.  Cortez orders his men to move.  He also starts to drive even faster.  Cortez’s gunmen in two black S.U.V. automobiles, execute an attack on the police.  The attack is successful, and, it opens up the highway.  Cortez drives through, without a problem.  Bannister is told about, the attack.  At the same time, Sheriff Owens drives to the Parsons Farm.  Bailey and Sarah stand around the body.  Sheriff Owens and Deputy Sheriff Figuerola enter the house.  Figuerola believes that, it is a botched armed robbery.  Sheriff Owens orders Bailey and Sarah, to look around the outside.  Sheriff Owens inspects Mr. Parsons’s body.  Figuerola is still present.  Sheriff Owens doesn’t believe that, the murder scene is correct.  Outside, Bailey and Sarah look around using their flashlights.  They continue to look in a direction, towards the canyon.  In the Corvette ZR1, Cortez continues to drive.  It is revealed that, Agent Richards is being paid by Cortez.  Cortez shows Agent Richards, the transfer to her bank account.  Agent Richards asks Cortez, to take off the handcuffs.  Cortez tosses her the key, and, Richards takes off the handcuffs.  Cortez begins to drive, even faster.  Bannister is told that, the Corvette ZR1 has been lost.  At the Parsons Farm, Sheriff Owens and Deputy Sheriff Figuerola inspect the tractor.  They find the blood.  Sheriff Owens knows that, Mr. Parsons was killed outside, and then, the body was moved inside.  At the office, Bannister attempts to predict Cortez’s route.  Bannister sends men to the official border point of entry, with the Country of Mexico.  However, he also predicts Sommerton.  He decides to call Sheriff Owens, on the telephone.  Outside the Parsons Farm, Sheriff Owens looks around.  He answers the telephone call, from Bannister.  Bannister says that, Cortez is making his way towards the Mexican border.  Additionally, he believes that, he could pass through Sommerton.  Bannister also asks Sheriff Owens, to receive an F.B.I. S.W.A.T. Team.  Sheriff Owens decides to end, the telephone conversation.  Figuerola is standing next to Sheriff Owens.  Sheriff Owens tells Figuerola, what is happening.  Figuerola replies and says; shit, when it rains it pours.  Sheriff Owens feels that, everything is connected.  It is 5:25 am, Bailey and Sarah drive.  Out of nowhere, they see Burrell’s men.  Burrell’s men prepare their weapons.  Bailey and Sarah exit, the police patrol car.  Unexpectedly, Sheriff Owens calls them on the police radio.  Bailey reports that, they see men.  Sheriff Owens tells Bailey to stop and return; immediately.  Sheriff Owens decides to drive to their location; fast.  Sarah attempts to talk to Sheriff Owens, on the police radio.  Sarah reports a lot of men and construction lights.  Out of nowhere, one of Burrell’s men approaches Bailey.  Burrell’s man shoots Bailey.  Sarah fires her gun, from behind the patrol car.  A gunfight quickly starts, from there.  During the gunfight, Burrell and his men continue building a bridge.  Sarah reports the gunfight, to Figuerola.  The gunfight becomes more intense.  Bailey is shot, one more time.  Burrell’s men surround the patrol car.  Bailey is about to be killed, when unexpectedly, Sheriff Owens arrives.  Sheriff Owens runs over one of Burrell’s men.  Then, he opens fire with a shotgun; from inside the S.U.V.  Sheriff Owens drives in reverse, and, he crashes into the patrol car.  He drives towards Bailey, and, Sarah runs alongside the S.U.V.  Sheriff Owens stops at Bailey’s location.  Sarah puts Bailey, inside the S.U.V.  Figuerola arrives, and, he opens fire with a shotgun.  He fires from his patrol car.  Sheriff Owens and Figuerola start to drive away.  One of Burrell’s men fires an R.P.G., at Sheriff Owens.  The R.P.G. misses, and, Sarah’s patrol car explodes.  Sheriff Owens and Figuerola continue driving; no one follows them.  In the S.U.V., Bailey attempts to hold on.  Unfortunately, he dies in the S.U.V.  All of the Sheriffs, return to the Sheriffs’ Station.  Sheriff Owens carries Bailey’s body inside.  Frank, from inside the jail cell, learns of Bailey’s death.  Sarah tells him, what happened.  It is 6:02 am, Cortez continues to drive on the highway.  Burrell calls Cortez on the telephone.  Burrell tells him, about, the gunfight against the Sheriffs.  Burrell also expects that the bridge, will be completed on time.  Sheriff Owens calls Bannister, on the telephone.  He reports the gunfight, and, Burrell building the bridge.  Unexpectedly, Bannister ignores what Sheriff Owens said.  Sheriff Owens becomes angry, and, he hangs up the telephone.  From this point forward; the series of events, take the viewer, to the end.  The Sheriffs fight a big battle, in the downtown area, against Burrell’s men.  Additionally, Dinkum and Frank end up fighting in this battle.  Everything builds up to a one on one fist fight, on the bridge.  Sheriff Owens fights Cortez; almost to the death.  Finally; you have to watch, in order to know, how this movie ends.
