Movie Narrative: The Last King of Scotland (2006)

            The synopsis follows.  The Last King of Scotland (2006) is a history and political drama story, out of the African Continent.  In the year 1970, Dr. Nicholas Garrigan feels frustrated about his life.  Furthermore, Garrigan decides to leave Scotland.  He spins a globe, and, he stops it with his finger.  The country, which his finger points to, is the country where he will escape to.  The country is Canada, and, Garrigan decides to do it; one more time.  This time the country is Uganda.  Dr. Garrigan decides to escape to this country.  In the Country of Uganda, the African Continent, Dr. Garrigan travels by bus.  Unexpectedly, Garrigan sees soldiers.  Garrigan is informed that, there has been a coup d'état.  General Idi Amin, has taken power.  Idi Amin, is the new President of Uganda.  Garrigan continues to travel, and, he arrives at his destination.  Sarah Merrit is there to greet, Garrigan.  Sarah is married to Dr. Merrit.  Garrigan is there to help Dr. Merrit, provide medical care to the people of Uganda.  Garrigan starts working, alongside Dr. Merrit.  The hospital, is full of Ugandans, who require medical treatment.  One day, Garrigan learns that, President Amin will be visiting a nearby village.  Garrigan asks Sarah, if she wants to go.  Grudgingly, Sarah says yes.  The Presidential visit is a celebration.  Garrigan and Sarah arrive at the celebration.  President Amin arrives to deliver a speech.  Amin, promises a government of action; not words.  Sarah insists to Garrigan that, they should leave.  Grudgingly, Garrigan agrees to leave.  Garrigan drives, and, they travel on a dirt road.  Unexpectedly, soldiers stop Garrigan and Sarah.  The soldiers are looking for a doctor.   Garrigan and Sarah agree to follow the soldiers.  Apparently, President Amin’s car crashed against a bull.  President Amin’s car, is also, stuck on the side of the road.  President Amin injured his hand, during the accident.  Garrigan attends to Amin’s hand.  Meanwhile, Sarah attempts to help, with the bull.  Unexpectedly, Garrigan shoots the bull, dead.  Garrigan used President Amin’s handgun.  Amin wants to know, if, Garrigan is British.  Garrigan replies that, he is Scottish.  President Amin is amused, by this fact.  Surprisingly, Amin asks Garrigan, if, they can exchange shirts.  Garrigan is wearing a t-shirt that says, Scotland.  Eventually, President Amin successfully convinces Garrigan to accept the job position of, Personal Physician to the President of Uganda.  The honeymoon ends quickly.  Dr. Nicholas Garrigan is forced to live through political turmoil.  Furthermore, President Amin takes away Garrigan’s passport.  Dr. Nicholas Garrigan is trapped and unable to escape, the Country of Uganda.  Director, Kevin MacDonald, does a good job.  The story is a complex story; however, Mr. MacDonald is able to present the movie in a coherent way.  The political events of that time, are coherently presented and combined with the personal relationship of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, and, President Idi Amin.  Furthermore, the viewer can understand this story, in a linear sequence.  The writers do an equally good job.  The story is coherently and concisely presented.  The movie is well written, overall.  Unfortunately, several things fall short.  Particularly, this movie doesn’t have spectacular dialogue.  The officially recognized stars contribute tremendously.  They would be missed, if they were not chosen.  Special recognition is merited to Forest Whitaker and James McAvoy.  The Idi Amin and Dr. Nicholas Garrigan characters are extremely memorable.  Furthermore, these characters are memorable together.  Overall, The Last King of Scotland (2006) earns the rating of 6 out of 10. 
            The movie narrative of, The Last King of Scotland (2006), is as follows.  It is the year 1970.  Furthermore, it is Scotland, UK.  Nicholas Garrigan is officially a doctor.  He celebrates his graduation with his friends and classmates.  They celebrate by jumping into the lake, which is part, of the university campus.  At his parent’s house, Garrigan eats dinner.  Garrigan’s father is also a doctor.  Garrigan’s parents are proud of him.  After dinner, Garrigan smokes a cigarette.  Unexpectedly, he screams in frustration.  Garrigan feels frustrated about his life.  Garrigan decides to leave Scotland.  He spins a globe, and, he stops it with his finger.  The country, which his finger points to, is the country where he will escape to.  The country is Canada, and, Garrigan decides to do it; one more time.  This time the country is Uganda.  Dr. Garrigan decides to escape to this country.  In the Country of Uganda, the African Continent, Dr. Garrigan travels by bus.  Unexpectedly, Garrigan sees soldiers.  Garrigan is informed that, there has been a coup d'état.  General Idi Amin, has taken power.  Idi Amin, is the new President of Uganda.  Garrigan continues to travel by bus.  Garrigan stops, in order, to have sexual intercourse with a Ugandan woman.  Garrigan continues to travel by bus.  Garrigan arrives at his destination.  Sarah Merrit is there to greet, Garrigan.  Sarah is married to Dr. Merrit.  Garrigan is there to help Dr. Merrit, provide medical care to the people of Uganda.  Sarah drives, and, they travel on a dirt road.  During the drive, they talk about the coup d'état.  Garrigan starts working, alongside Dr. Merrit.  The hospital, is full of Ugandans, who require medical treatment.  Garrigan and Dr. Merrit, provide medical treatment to Ugandan children.  Garrigan continues to provide medical treatment.  One day, Dr. Merrit leaves to help a baby.  Garrigan and Sarah have an opportunity to talk.  Sarah believes that the work, is not Garrigan’s type of work.  Garrigan says that, he wants to make a difference.  Garrigan plays soccer with the children.  Garrigan learns that, President Amin will be visiting a nearby village.  Garrigan asks Sarah, if she wants to go.  Grudgingly, Sarah says yes.  The Presidential visit is a celebration.  Garrigan and Sarah arrive at the celebration.  President Amin arrives to deliver a speech.  Amin, promises a government of action; not words.  Sarah insists to Garrigan that, they should leave.  Grudgingly, Garrigan agrees to leave.  Garrigan drives, and, they travel on a dirt road.  Unexpectedly, soldiers stop Garrigan and Sarah.  The soldiers are looking for a doctor.   Garrigan and Sarah agree to follow the soldiers.  Apparently, President Amin’s car crashed against a bull.  President Amin’s car, is also, stuck on the side of the road.  President Amin injured his hand, during the accident.  Garrigan attends to Amin’s hand.  Sarah attempts to help, with the bull.  Unexpectedly, Garrigan shoots the bull, dead.  Garrigan used President Amin’s handgun.  Amin wants to know, if, Garrigan is British.  Garrigan replies that, he is Scottish.  President Amin is amused, by this fact.  Surprisingly, Amin asks Garrigan, if, they can exchange shirts.  Garrigan is wearing a t-shirt that says, Scotland.  Amin also says that, the shirt will also be for his son.  Unexpectedly, President Amin and his soldiers leave.  At night, Garrigan and Sarah pass time together.  Sarah rejects Garrigan’s romantic intentions.  Sarah also says that, she feels like shit sometimes.  The feeling is, due to the fact that, her husband is important and successful.  Garrigan says that, he knows the feeling.  Garrigan feels the same way, about his father.  Garrigan kisses Sarah, and, Sarah leaves the room.  The next day, Dr. Merrit wakes up Garrigan.  Apparently, people have arrived, to be able, to see Garrigan.  The Minister of Health, Jonah, is there to see Garrigan.  Additionally, Jonah asks Garrigan to travel to see President Amin.  Garrigan informs Sarah that, he is leaving.  Garrigan travels to see Amin.  Garrigan arrives in Kampala.  Garrigan arrives at the Presidential Palace.  He is asked to sit and wait, for the President.  Amin arrives feeling amused.  President Amin offers Garrigan the position of, Personal Physician to the President of Uganda.  Amin also says that, he knows when he is going to die.  Furthermore, that the vision came to Amin, in a dream.  Garrigan has difficulty accepting the job position.  President Amin jokes around with Garrigan.  He also tells Garrigan that; he wants to stay, in order, to be with the woman.  Additionally, the woman has to be a married woman.  Garrigan grudgingly admits to both things.  However, Garrigan doesn’t accept the job position.  President Amin tells Garrigan that, he will be taken back the next morning.  Furthermore, that this night, Garrigan is invited to attend a formal dinner.  Amin sends Garrigan to a tailor.  Amin pays to have a dark business suit made; for Garrigan.  At the tailor shop, Garrigan witnesses soldiers chasing down one of Obote’s men.  Obote is the President, who lost power during the coup d'état.  This presents the opportunity, for Garrigan, to meet a British man.  Garrigan arrives at the formal dinner.  President Amin finds Garrigan.  Furthermore, he introduces Garrigan to his wives.  Amin has 5 children with his first wife.  Amin has 3 children with his second wife.  The third wife is named Kay.  Kay is the mother of the son, who got Garrigan’s Scotland t-shirt.  President Amin takes Garrigan to meet the British High Commission.  Garrigan re-meets, Mr. Stone, the man which he met; at the tailor shop.  Amin leaves Garrigan with the British men.  Garrigan and the British men, talk about things.  Garrigan tells Mr. Stone that, he is Scottish.  President Amin gives a speech.  During the night, Garrigan is asked to see President Amin.  President Amin is sick, and, Garrigan provides medical treatment.  Garrigan successfully treats Amin’s medical symptoms.  Apparently, Amin mixed aspirin with beer.  President Amin had believed that, it was an assassination attempt.  Amin shares his personal story.  Amin’s father left when he was a child.  Amin joined the British Army, and, he worked in the kitchen.  Obviously, Amin was poor during the majority of his life.  Amin also confesses that, the British put him in power.  The next morning, Garrigan calls Sarah, on the telephone.  Garrigan tells Sarah that, he will be staying in Kampala.  Furthermore, that he has accepted a job, with President Amin.  Sarah is disappointed.  Garrigan formally accepts the job position.  Jonah gives Garrigan a tour of the hospital.  At the hospital, Garrigan meets his predecessor, Dr. Junju.  Additionally, he re-meets Mr. Stone.  Mr. Stone asks Garrigan, to stay in touch.  Specifically, that he should stay in touch, with the Foreign Relations Office of Britain.  Garrigan is not amused.  Garrigan passes a lot of time with President Amin.  Furthermore, they do a lot of personal things.  A small amount is business.  One day, Amin asks Garrigan to take his place, in a meeting.  Garrigan arrives for the meeting.  The meeting is with the Country of Austria.  Garrigan, Jonah and Amin meet to go over the meeting with the Country of Austria.  After the meeting, Amin asks Garrigan, if Jonah is not loyal.  Garrigan passes time working at the hospital.  Unexpectedly, a battle starts.  Dr. Junju and Garrigan watch, from the roof of the hospital.  Out of nowhere, Garrigan is taken away to see one of President Amin’s children.  Amin’s son experiences an epileptic seizure.  The mother is Kay.  This son is Amin’s second son, with Kay.  Garrigan successfully treats the epileptic seizure.  Garrigan insists on a hospital appointment.  However, Kay vehemently rejects the idea.  At a formal celebration, Garrigan romantically notices Amin’s wife; Kay.  One morning, President Amin arrives to give Garrigan a new car; as a gift.  Amin insists that Garrigan, should drive Amin to the airport, in the new car.  During the drive to the airport, Amin and Garrigan follow the soldiers.  Unexpectedly, rebel soldiers attack Amin’s soldiers.  The attack is a full scale ambush.  President Amin is in shock and terror.  Garrigan is clever, and, he successfully drives around the ambush.  At the airport, President Amin is surrounded by soldiers.  Amin repeats that, he has seen his own death; in a dream.  President Amin starts to become paranoid.  Everyone is a traitor, according to Amin.  Out of nowhere, Amin promotes a captain to Head of Security.  President Amin wants Jonah to be present; immediately.  Amin continues to rant and rave.  He becomes angry at Garrigan.  The soldiers report that, they have captured the rebels.  President Amin confronts the captured prisoners.  Garrigan is present.  Amin asks about working for Obote.  Time passes, Garrigan begins to feel tormented.  Garrigan passes time at a bar.  Garrigan notices that, Jonah is at the same bar.  Garrigan becomes suspicious of Jonah.  During a work day, Garrigan reports to President Amin, Jonah’s activities at the bar.  Additionally, Garrigan suggests looking into Jonah.  Garrigan passes time at the swimming pool.  At the swimming pool, Garrigan talks to Amin’s wife; Kay.  Mr. Stone is also at the swimming pool.  Mr. Stone doesn’t like President Amin.  Mr. Stone tells Garrigan that, Amin has been disappearing people; across the country.  Garrigan becomes very angry, at Mr. Stone.  Mr. Stone asks Garrigan, for Jonah’s location.  Due to the fact that, Jonah is also missing, and, he cannot be found.  Surprisingly, Mr. Stone invites Garrigan out for drinks.  Garrigan verifies that, Jonah is dead.  Garrigan meets-up with Mr. Stone and another man.  For some reason, they talk business.  Garrigan says that, Jonah fled to Tanzania.  Additionally, that Jonah embezzled a lot of money.  Mr. Stone says that, Jonah was in the middle of buying large quantities of penicillin.  Furthermore, he knows because, he arranged the meeting with the seller.  The other man is a newspaper reporter.  He asks Garrigan, if he can be quoted as a “government spokesperson.”  Garrigan starts to feel tormented.  Additionally; during a heavy rain, he passes time in the swimming pool.  Garrigan travels to see President Amin.  Unexpectedly, he meets two body-doubles.  President Amin reveals himself, dressed in normal clothes.  Garrigan tells Amin that, he is returning to Scotland.  President Amin refuses Garrigan’s wish.  Garrigan reveals that, he is troubled by Jonah’s disappearance.  Amin also says that, Garrison’s work in Uganda is not finished.  Additionally, he becomes angry at Garrigan.  Garrigan says that, he is from Scotland.  President Amin doesn’t let Garrigan leave the country.  Garrigan feels terror.  President Amin insists that Garrigan, should attend a party.  At the party, Amin attempts to set-up Garrigan with a woman.  Garrigan drinks heavily, and, he remembers a lot of things.  Surprisingly, Garrigan meets-up with Amin’s wife; Kay.  Garrigan has sexual intercourse with Kay.  After the sex, Kay tells Garrigan that, Amin is always a bad person.  Kay recommends to Garrigan that, he should leave to Scotland.  Garrigan returns to his house.  He discovers that, someone has been looking for things.  Garrigan discovers that, his passport has been taken.  A Ugandan passport was left in its place.  From this point forward; the series of events, take the viewer, to the end.  Garrigan continues his love affair with Kay.  Kay becomes pregnant, and, they talk about an abortion.  Unexpectedly, President Amin kills his own wife; Kay.  Eventually, President Amin has Garrigan beaten and tortured.  Finally; you have to watch, in order to know, how this movie ends.
